Chapter 1

The first chapter attempts to explain how prostitutes are like the departmental-store Santa Claus due to supply and demand.

It explains how over the years prostitution has declined but not on the basis that society has become morally upright, instead it claims its because women will have sex for free. However it does state that during the holiday times the demand for sex increases and so does the supply, with many prostitutes serving part time enters the workforce. The authors attempt to justify this by saying how prostitution is driven by the differences in how much money and man and a woman makes. Since a woman can make more money per hour it makes it much more cost effective. When the prostitution industry is taken from a much more economical perspective it seems like a brilliant job for women to make money. However, since prostitution is considered to be morally incorrect and socially unacceptable, it is illegal. The authors impose the question, if morals were all set aside, will the country be more economically efficient?
