He is a sinner, a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct.
John Proctor
ABIGAIL: Give me a word, John. A soft word.
PROCTOR: No, no, Abby. That’s done with.
Abigail and Proctor had an affair before the play is written, and she is trying to go after him again. He has realized his mistakes and is trying to right them by moving on.
PROCTOR: Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I’ll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind. We never touched, Abby.
Proctor is very religious and knows what he has done has gone against everything he believes in. He is trying very hard to not make the same mistakes. In these times it was a sin to lie with another woman, it was greatly frowned upon by the rest of society. He doesn't want his mistake to reach public ears.
Chuck lives a life full of sins and immoralities. He makes bad decisions daily but once he realizes all the wrong he's done, he tries to right himself. A sudden shock brought him back into the everyday world, as with John Proctor, he now wishes to remake himself geared more towards spirituality. John Proctor seems like this change is going to stick, and as we can see from the finale of Gossip Girl, Chuck turned his life around and never looked back.
