The crust is divided into two types: oceanic crust and continental crust. Oceanic crust is found under the ocean floor. On the other hand, continental crust is found under land masses. Did you know that continental crust is thicker than oceanic crust but oceanic crust is more dense? Oceanic crust is made mostly out of basalt. Basaltic has more than 50% of silicone oxygen2 or SiO2 and is also full of iron and magnesium.
Oceanic crust is about 6 to 7 kilometers (4 miles) thick. Oceanic crust has a depth of about 7 kilometers (4 miles). Both the oceanic crust and the continental crust is in the solid phase. The continental crust is between 10 and 75 kilometers (6 to 47 miles) thick. Therefore, continental crust is thicker than oceanic crust. Continental crust is mostly made of granite, granitic has less than 60% of silicone oxygen2 (SiO2). Continental crust has a depth of about 10 and 75 kilometers (6 to 47 miles). The crust has some topographic features such as mountains, continental rifts, and deep trenches. Mountain belts are several mountain series that run parallel of each other. A continental margin separates the ocean floor from dry-land including the continental shelf, slope, and rise. A craton is a part of Earth's continental crust that has not been disturbed or has changed in millions of years.
