Death is and has always been part of life. This is shown in the books/stories "Tuck Everlasting" and "Come Again in the Spring". The scene it is displayed in "Tuck Everlasting" is where Tuck explains to Winnie about the wheel of life. He tells her that death is part of the cycle, "right there next to being born." New people are coming into the world everyday, and people leave it too. In "Come Again in the Spring", the scene this is displayed in is when the tall, black, figure tells the old man that his time is up. Eventually everyone has to except that it is their turn to leave this world.
