Altaic Languages

Spoken across 8,000Km band of Asia between Turkey on the west, and Mongolia & China on the east. Most speakers are of Lataic languages Muslim.
Turkish is most widely used Altaic language. Used to be wrote with Arabic letters, but in 1928 the Turkish government ordered it to be rewrote in Roman letters.
Languages with at least 1 million speakers include Azerbaijani, Bashkir, Chuvash, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, Tatar, Turkmen, Uighur, and Uzbek.
Soviet Union suppressed Altaic languages to create homogenous national culture. With the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Altaic languages became official in newly independent countries.
