Resolution: 50-100 nm. Its resolution is limited in comparison to the TEM microscope due to scanning.

Sem microscopes

Works in a similar way to a TEM microscope however a scanning electron microscope scans a beam of electrons over the surface of the specimen. This specimen has previously been coated in a heavy metal and so the electron are reflected off.

Uses and effectiveness: can be used to create 3d images of objects such as a flies eyes ect.

Pros:
-produces 3D images
-sample does not need to be electron transparent
-larger range of magnification adjustments

Cons:
-only possible to produce greyscale images.
-whole thing needs to be carried out in a vacuum (same with TEM)
-lower resolution to TEM

Uses:
- It is useful in the study of new materials.
-It can be used to look in detail at diagnoses of diseases.
- It can be used in medical research to observe details which may be too small for a light microscope.
