The queen for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakably signs of queenlessness.

-Man and Insects

The epigraph talks about when a queen bee is taken from her hive, anarchy begins. We predicted that Lily, the protagonist and narrator, comes from a dysfunctional family because there being no mother or "Queen Bee." For example, T-Ray abuses his power when treating his daughter. Lily also does not know how to comb her hair or dress fashionably. Lily has no knowledge of things that are essential in a girl's life, supporting the idea that Lily had no "Queen Bee" to direct her in the right path.

"I called him T-Ray because "Daddy" never fit him"-Page 2 Chapter 1

"My mother died when I was four years old"-Page 2 Chapter 1

"My hair was constantly going off in eleven wrong directions, and T-Ray, naturally, refused to buy me bristle rollers..."-Page 3 Chapter 1

"You wake me up again, Lily, and I'll get out the Martha Whites, you hear me?"-Page 5 Chapter 1
