Rapids flow over a slope made of hard and soft rock. The soft rock erodes away faster than the hard rock...

This creates a plunge pool, which undercuts the hard rock, and so, a waterfall is born.

As the plunge pool deepens, the hard rock finds itself with nothing to rest on, and eventually falls into the waterfall.
