How does Nuclear energy HARM the environment?
While nuclear energy is very useful and has many advantages over fossil fuels, it also has some disadvantages. If there is one slight error, the results will be devastating.
Here are some of the disadvantages:
•Radioactive waste. This waste is released into the environment if there is a leak, or an explosion.
•This waste is extremely toxic to living organisms, and even worse; it stays that way for thousands of years.
•Accidents. While many new technologies have been put in place to make sure that disasters like the Chernobyl or more recently Fukushima don't happen again, the risk is still relatively high.
• Impact on Aquatic Life. Eutrophication is another result of radioactive waste in the environment. This causes uncontrolled aquatic plant growth, which kills other animals in that area.
• Nuclear Radiation. There are power reactors called breeders. They produce plutonium. It is an element which is not found in nature however it is a fissionable element. It is a by-product of the chain reaction and is very harmful if introduced in nature.
