Paramilitaries in Colombia

- Colombian Paramilitaries are Right-Wing (Conservative)
-The Colombian government used to see the guerrilla groups as a larger threat than the paramilitaries, so they used to support the paramilitaries (trusting them to eliminate the guerrilla groups)
-The paramilitaries do not just kill members of the guerrilla groups, but they kill anyone who sympathizes with them as well (union workers, religious activists, etc.)
-Colombian paramilitaries are responsible for most of the killings in Colombia today
-As a result, they have been repeatedly singled out for accounts of human rights abuse
-Today, the main paramilitary group is the AUC (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia)
