Born on a Maryland plantation, Douglass was sent to live with the Hugh Auld family in Baltimore eight years later.
There he learned to read and write with Mary Auld, a pleasant woman until she was trained to be cross. Douglass then was taught by young boys. He was influenced to read, which encouraged him to be free. He wrote a speech about anti-slavery. This speech was so moving he was instantly wanted for lecturing. He published an autobiography, but being a runaway slave, he was worried about being arrested. Douglass moved to England. After he bought his freedom with help, he moved back.
