My bondage and my freedom
Fredrick Douglass

"My Bondage and My Freedom" by Douglass is about salvery. Douglass's purpose was to prove that slavery is a tremendously terrible thing.
"I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence."
In this quote, Douglass is saying that even though what he believes in is wrong to the eyes of many, he does not care and will continue to fight for what he thinks is right. Many people now are fighting for gay rights, and they continue speak out against people who think negatively towards it. Songs about this are like "born this way" by Lady Gaga, or "I am what I am" by Gloria gaynor.
