To America
By the 1930's he and his parents, including five of his other siblings, got on a boat and headed to America. The main reason, as I am told, is that they left the small island for a better life than simple farm work day in and day out. But my great grandfather had also heard of the great an better life to have in America. Imagine, no more working out in the fields until your hands hurt so much you could barely hold a cup correctly. Imagine not wearing the same clothing all the time, or sweating and breaking your back in the heat of the summer. No longer having to travel outside for firewood to being back to the house and curl up to one another for warmth. So when Abel was at the youthful age of eighteen he packed up his few belongings and followed his family to the docks. They took the boat all the way to Maine and then by many buses, taxies and cars they finally reached the state of Massachusetts. Or to be more specific, Chelsea Mass.
