Lords were given fiefs by the King or Queen. In return, the Lords pledged fealty to them.

In times of war, the lords would provide the King or Queen with soldiers. In times of peace, they would uphold the king's laws and collect taxes for him.

The Lords provided protection to serfs in return for the serfs working their land, paying their taxes, and acting as soldiers.
