Independent variables are what is changed in an experiment. A dependent variable is what's measured. Controlled variables are what have to stay the same in an experiment. They are important to the validity of an experiment because they help to balance out results and show a change in what you are comparing. Multiple trials should be done in order to see if there is any variation in data and to see if the experiment retains it's validity.
