The Symptoms of Pertussis

Pertussis usually develops within 7-10 days after exposure, but sometimes not for six weeks. It's usually spread by coughing and sneezing. Starts as a cold that includes a severe cough or a cough that lasts for a long time. It might be pertussis if you have these symptoms. If you want to know for sure, you should contact your doctor. Pertussis usually starts with cold-like symptoms and maybe a mild cough or fever. After two weeks, severe coughing begins and can become a series of coughing fits that continues for weeks. There can be violent and rapid coughing, over and over, until all the air is gone and you're forced to inhale causing a "whooping" sound. Causes vomiting and you'll be very tired after coughing fits. Starts with cold-like symptoms; runny nose, low-grade fever, and mild occasional cough, apnea- a pause in breathing (infants). Coughing fits occur more often at night and you recover very slowly. Coughing fits can return after recovery from pertussis with many other infections for many, many months after recovery.
