How Pertussis Affects the Respiratory System

The Bordetella pertussis bacteria attaches to the cilia (tiny hair-like extensions) that line part of the upper respiratory system. The Bordetella pertussis bacteria then release toxins that damage the cilia and cause inflammation (swelling).
