How To Treat Pertussis

Pertussis can be diagnosed by a history typical signs and symptoms, physical examination, laboratory test which involves taking a sample of secretions (with a swap or syringe filled with saline) from the back of the throat throughout the nose and a blood test. It's usually treated with antibiotics (stated on next page) and early treatment is very important. Early treatment can also help prevent the spread of pertussis to others. Treatment with antibiotics can make the infection less severe if started before the coughing fits begin.
