Scott and Zelda faced marital troubles in while living in France. The fought over content for their books in progress. Zelda published "Save Me the Waltz" before Scott released "Tender is the Night", both novels being about their marriage (Malfait 16).
Some time later the two split, stressed by Zelda's mental illness and Scott's declining ability to write popular literature. Scott went to Hollywood to attempt to write screenplays (Krystal 37).
Fitzgerald died on December 23, 1940, at age 44, and was buried in Rockville, Maryland (New York Times). He was separated from his wife and had an affair with Sheilah Graham, a popular gossip columnist, before his death (Malfait 15). Zelda Fitzgerald was plagued by schizophrenia for much of year adult life, and was in and out of mental institutions.
