Segregation
How it Came to Be
In 1876-1877, the Jim Crow Laws were passed. These laws segregated everything from where they watch movies to where they drink from water fountains. The laws were mall different in each state but all had the same meaning: segregation of African Americans and white men.
The Jim Crow laws separated bus rides, bathrooms, libraries, education, railroads, telephone booths, mining, military, and many more. In many places, white people and African Americans could not eve speak to one another.
Intermarriage was outlawed in most states, even going to school together was illegal. The African Americans were treated like dirt because of the way the people acted around them, like they were an outsider. The Jim Crow laws did not help them in any way. The only thing it did was add fire to their resistance.
This race was treated awful, however, one organization came to their rescue.
