Jane wrote a large amount of books, starred in documentaries and won many awards. The first book she wrote was "My Friends the Wild Chimpanzees" in Washington, DC for National Geographic Society in 1969. Since then she has published 113 other books, including some works for children. Her first documentary was "Miss Goodall and the Wild Chimpanzees" for the National Geographic Society, just six years before her first book. It was filmed in 1963. Her latest film is the world renowned "Chimpanzee" by Disneynature. Goodall has won 81 awards since 1963, not excluding her collage awards. Her awards have been for her scientific research and conservation work. During the 1980s, Jane realized how many of her beloved chimpanzees are disappearing. They were becoming more more endangered through poaching. She realized the best way to save chimpanzees and other animals in the same situation, was not to be with them ,but to show her deep love and compassion to the world by becoming an animal activist. Jane Goodall has always been about the next generation. One of her first groups was "Roots and Shoots". It started out with one group of sixteen passionate young adults. Now there is 10,000 groups in many countries all around the world. Jane Goodall has inspired many generations of conservationists with her words and actions.
