Jane married on 28 March 1964. She married a Dutch nobleman and wildlife photographer Baron Hugo van Lawick. During their marriage they had one son on born 1967. His name is Hugo Eric Louis. Jane and Hugo divorced in 1974. In 1975, Jane remarried a man by the name of Derek Bryceson. He was a member of Tanzania's parliament and the director of that country's national parks. He died of bone cancer in October 1980. While Bryceson was in the parliament, it was said that, he help protect the reserve where Jane was doing her research.
