Under the second root was the well of knowledge, guarded by Mimir, the Wise. Odin, the King of Asgard went to Mimir asking for a sip from the well. She denied him saying that he must give in order to receive. In giving, he tore out his eye to give Mimir and he received the Runes, powerful magic that would assist the Aesir in battle. Of the other gods, only five were important: Balder, Thor, Freyr, Heimdall, and Tyr.
