-boys are favored over girls

- some women worked generally "feminine" jobs

- husband can stop his wife from working

- marriage is recognized as a legal commitment from god

- men were allowed to marry non-Arab women , & may have 4 wives , while women must only have 1 man

- men can divorce his wives with no issues , but a woman can only divorce her husband unless she goes through the court system , & the father obtains custody for the children

- women typically think that marriage determines their future

- marriage within the family was a common strategy

- males inherited full share of their father's estate , wives & daughters had to
half- share

- father has most of the authority over the family

- the children must respect their father

-the the extended family is very close
