Energy

Kinetic energy

Potential energy

Potential energy is the energy of position, or stored energy.

Kinetic energy is the energy in motion.

Energy

Example

Energy is the ability to move or change matter.

On a roller coaster there are many places to represent kinetic and potential energy. For example, the ramp that goes up there is lots of kinetic energy. As soon as you reach the top, the potential energy that you stored on the way up releases, as you are going down the ramp.

Some kinds of energies

Chemical energy- stores energy into bonds
Mechanical energy- moves objects
Electrical energy- moves electrons through circuit wires
Sound energy- vibrates; makes a sound to the ear
Light energy- travels as a wave
Thermal energy- produces heat
Solar energy- provides most energy on earth, it is generated from the sun

These energies can change from one form to another.
