Woodrow Wilson a candidate for democratic presidency election in 1912, claimed that if he should be elected, he would be fair and serve justice despite race or color, but when he was elected, he replaced many federal jobs occupied by blacks, with white people. This angered black people with federal jobs in the states. If anything, during Wilson's presidency, segregation was encouraged. Word of disease and sexuality discouraged much interaction between white and black people.

The Brownsville Affair was an incident that involved the alleged action of black infantry men holding a shooting, killing a bartender and wounding a policeman, through white witnesses. Despite the non-existent evidence of the infantrymen having any involvement of the shooting, President Roosevelt discharged 167 infantrymen without honor. Such controversy of the case caused the discharge to be reversed by the U.S. Senate committee in 1972.

On March 21, 1915, the movie, The Birth of a Nation was seen by President Woodrow Wilson. The movie portrayed such untrue and wrong perceptions handling the whereabouts during the civil war about the Ku Klux Klan and black people. This film by Thomas Dixon, angered black people and provoked and encouraged white people to promote more violence and hatred towards black Americans. The film caused riots, murders and the relaunching of the Ku Klux Klan.

In 1903, W.E.B Du Bois published The Souls of Black Folk a book of essays relating to the history and life of African Americans. A famous quote in The Souls of Black Folk was, "The problem with the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line." In the "book" Du Bois criticized Booker T. Washington for his lack to communicate.
