Utilitarianism

We approach a situation using utilitarianism like a math problem
This math problem has 3 major steps
Through the eyes of Mill happiness is the existence of pleasure and the absence of pain.
The decision that would result in the least amount of pain and most pleasure would be to follow your companies philosophy and stay with the lower waste emissions. You would stay true to your own motto as well has help the environment and all the people of New York City.
Next we must determine which decision brings the greatest amount of happiness to the greatest amount of people, this is called the principle of utility.
If in this situation you are a benevolent spectator, one whose happiness does not take precedent over others, the decision to chose the lower emissions would bring about the greatest amount of pleasure with the least amount of pain. Everyone in the city would be safer because their water would not be polluted. They would also trust your company because they know you are true to your word. This decision would benefit everyone in the long run.
Through the eyes of Utilitarianism You would: chose the lesser waste emissions and follow your motto

In Utilitarianism you must weight the principle of utility for each situation
