16th C. Portrait (theme: human emotion)

Describe

This painting depicts a man in the middle of having a good time with vertical, actual, and thin lines, along with complex shapes.

Analyze

Emphasis: The emphasis is on the man, particularly his jolly expression.
Proportion: This painting is 3/4 the man & 1/4 background.
Movement: This painting is static because the man appears to be frozen in time, not quite finished with his actions. The position of the hat, the white of his collar, and the background directs your eyes towards the man's face.
Balance: This painting is symmetrically balanced.
Unity: As stated in "movement", the items that move your eye towards the mans face add visual interest and help pull the piece together, as well as the fact that the man is in the middle of doing something, with his hand up.

Interpret

This painting is trying to convey a jolly man, who perhaps is having a drink with his friends and engaging in gossip. He reminds me of a Musketeer due to the way he's dressed.

The Jolly Toper by Frans Hals, 1627. Hals uses certain items to direct the eye to the jolly expression of this man, whose actions are frozen in time.
