21st C. Figurative Painting (theme: human emotion)

Peace by Sanjay Punekar, 2012. Punekar used bright colors and expression to convey a feeling of peace with oneself.

Describe

This painting depicts a man with complex shapes and a variety of colors floating in what appears to be some sort of dream or a place in his mind that he views as being peaceful. This is communicated using clean, actual lines with bright colors and geometric shapes.

Analyze

Emphasis: The man dominates this image, but the triangle and circle also take up a good amount as well.
Proportion: this painting is 1/3 the man and 2/3 the background with no negative spaces.
Movement: This painting is dynamic because it looks as though the objects are floating.
Balance: The balance is asymmetrical.
Repition: The colors that paint the man are also used in the rectangle next to the triangle.
Unity: The man mainly holds this painting together, and the angle of the square in the left points your eye to the man and the triangle shape.

Interpret

I believe this work is communicating a sense of inner peace, with its vibrant colors and the expression of the man, who feels at peace with himself. This work reminds me of a colorful, happy dream.
