Militia

The men who first joined the militia were “‘hallmarks of respectability or at least of full citizenship’” in their communities (61).
Native Americans, African Americans, white servants, and white men with no stable home were not allowed in the militia (61). Due to desperation, the whites that were not respected were recruited (61). The militia grew to be a place of promise for the poor, hope to rise in rank, to acquire some money, and to change their social status (61).
