The Transcontinental Railroad was a railroad that was picked by the government because there was a race between the union or central pacific railroad. They eventually picked the central pacific railroad. They raced to see who got theirs finished first. They wanted to connect the East and the West so they can communicate and transport goods with one another. they also built it so people can travel faster and safer. It was built during the gold rush.
