I think the whole reason they built the railroad was because of the gold rush. They started building it the same year the gold rush happened. I also think they wanted to bring people from the east to the west so the population would grow and people would spend more money. They wanted less people to die on their journeys to the gold rush. Traveling on the railroad was much safer then traveling by foot up the mountains which took a really long time.
