The Wild Turkey is found in almost all parts of North America as well as northern Mexico and is an extremely common game for hunters. They prefer to live in coniferous and hardwood forests with scattered open areas such as fields and orchards. Wild Turkeys are large, ground-dwelling birds with long necks and tails that look like a fan. A wild turkey's head color can be red, white, or blue depending on the season and can grow up to 24 lbs. in size! Breeding occurs in early spring and in the south around January and February. The average life expectancy of a Wild Turkey is about 1.5 years. Chicks can walk and feed themselves within 24 hours of hatching.
