The contrasting themes and traditions in Classical and Baroque Sculpture

Economy

Fertile soil of the south made it ideal for a lot more large scale plantations and crops like tobacco and cotton. Because agriculture was so profitable, southerners did not find the need to start investing in the industrial market. Eighty percent of southerners worked on the farm. Although two-third of southerners didn't own salves, the region was extremely tied to the economy and culture.

Southern Economy

There were almost as many African Americans but slaves and free - in the South as there were whites (4 million blacks and 5.5 million whites). There not that many large cities in the south aside from New Orleans. Other cities that did exist were usually located near a river or shipping ports
