De Gaulle disliked Americans and kept France out of NATO but didn't move any closer to the Soviet Union because of his personal fear of socialism. Struggled to keep former African territories under French rule and attempted to keep them from moving closer to the Soviet sphere of influence. Through various conflicts with former French colonies eventually relented on allowing them to obtain their freedom and collaborated with the English Government to also allow them to give freedom to many of their African colonies as well, focused on reforming the French Government and create a new Constitution.
