Salzburg gained independence from Bavaria in the 14th century. It later became the seat of a prince-bishop in the Holy Roman Empire, causing riots to break out in the city after the Reformation began to gain popularity.
The city was also occupied during the German Peasants' War, driving the Archbishop of Salzburg to the Fortress in the hills above the city.
Later, the city experienced a flux of wealth and prosperity due to their independence. In the 17th century Italian architects rebuilt the city, creating what we know as modern Salzburg, with beautiful palaces all around the city
