Gender division derived from family

My chores mainly consisted of cleaning inside, while my brothers worked outside. I would have preferred to do the work outside but that was how the division of labor worked in my family's house hold. This is a gender division because outside work is thought to be too hard for women.

The gender divisions I learned from these experiences were that girls were to be protected, watched, and weren't strong enough to work outside. But I am unwilling to accept this.

In high school I wasn't allowed to have a boy over and be in my room, especially not with the door closed but my brother could have a girl in his room, and it was no big deal. This bothered me because I felt like I could not be trusted or handle my own situations.

I was also told that if a boy ever broke my heart that my brother, or dad would protect me. I hated hearing this because I new I could take care of myself. This told me that women needed to be protected by men.
