• There was little fighting on the fourth day, except for some minor action near an area referred to as Golding's Farm.
• The Confederates conducted reconnaissance to determine if General McClellan's troops were moving from their fortifications.
• During the afternoon, it became apparent that the Union army was retreating to the James River.
