• The Union Army of the Potomac, under the command of General George McClellan, tried to capture the capital of the Confederacy, Richmond, Virginia.


• The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, under the leadership of General Robert E. Lee, attacked the Union army in defense of the capital.
