• Artist: Giovanni Fatori
• Title: Donna al Gabbro (Woman of the Gabbro)
• Date: 1886-1887
• Medium: Etching
: • Currently: Washington, DC
• Source: www.nga.gov/source/ngaweb/exhibitions/neoclassism-to- futurism.html
• Description: a woman standing tall, a barn in distance, a few tall trees, a large
bow around the woman's head, some grass and bushed scattered around in
the foreground.
• Analysis: Because it's an etching, there isn't any color or color scheme. It is a
symmetrical piece because the main focus is on the woman in the middle,
and there are buildings evenly distributed to the left and to the right. The
etchy texture with rough lines makes it look vintage and space is used by the buildings resting on the horizon line.
• Interpretation: Because this is an older work, the woman standing alone could represent how women didn't
have many rights and weren't thought of as equals to men; therefore they were somewhat isolated from the
general community. Also, her hands are on her hips and this could symbolize independence and individuality.
• Judgement: I believe that this work has character because it's an etching it has texture and the black & white
simplicity to it. Because it is such a plain picture, it's lacking meaning and can be interpreted as anything;
therefore, it has a weak statement.
