Battle end

The Japanese began withdrawing from Ioribaiwa on 24 September 1942, and the Australian troops began the offensive the next day, driving them back along the Kokoda track. From 16-29 October is the Battle of Eora Creek and Templeton's Crossing area, where Australian troops fight off stubborn Japanese resistance. On the 3 November 1942 Australian troops take Kokoda, unopposed by the Japanese. The 5-12 November saw the battles of Oivi and Gorari, where over 1000 Japanese soldiers were killed. The 15 November saw the Battle of the Beacheads commence. 1522 Australians were killed, and thousands more wounded in the ensuing battles.

Japanese resistance in Papua New Guinea ceases on 21 January 1943.
