Donald Ewen Cameron, a Scottish psychiatrists who worked for the CIA contributed largely to the program by conducting experiments on reprogramming the human brain by erasing memories, which were so inhumane that many of the experiments were conducted in Canada rather than in the U.S. Some of his experiments involved putting patients into a drug-induced coma for several weeks while playing loops of repetitive noises or sounds. He would use electroshock therapy at 30-40 times the normal power and used sensory deprivation, locking patients in a room with no stimulus for weeks.Brain wash therapy was also a common practice that involved causing brain concussions and amnesia through the use of weapons or sound waves to strike people without leaving any physical markings. Donald Cameron believed that he had honourable intentions to help schizophrenia through the reprogramming people, but his ‘research’ resulted in many deaths and permanently disabled people. Some of his patients suffered from amnesia and no longer remembered their parents and in some extreme cases, know how to talk.
A known death from Project MKUltra was that of professional tennis player Harold Blauer, who died in January of 1953 after a secret Army experiment with heavy dosages of MDA.
The CIA spent nearly $20 million, enlisting the services of researchers at more than 40 universities.
