In 1966 a Professor at California State University, Doctor Maulana Karenga, created Kwanzaa. During Kwanzaa, from December 26 to January 1, African-Americans remember their African heritage, consider their current place in America today, and embraces the seven principles of Kwanzaa called Nguzo Saba. They also set up a Kinara, candle holder, complete with Mishumaa Saba, 7 candles of 3 green, 3 red, and 1 black. The red represents the blood they have shed. The green represents hope and the color of the homeland. The black represents the faces of the African people.
