Stockings

The stockings above the fireplace tradition originated from an old legend that was popularly told in many places. A poor family left their socks above the fireplace on christmas to dry. Then, St.Nick seeing their struggles filled it with riches. When they woke up they were overjoyed. It was a tradition for many years, but became even more popular when they showed up in a popular piece of writing, A Visit from St.Nick, by Clement Moore. “The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St.Nick would soon be there.”
