ESSENTIAL QUESTION
Group
Do dominant genes found in the population gene pool show up more frequently in a family gene pool?
Our theory is that the answer of this question depends on the family studied. The percentage of people who have a widow’s peak in the overall population is 42%, and two out of three families studied had less family members with a widow’s peak than without. The percentage of people who have dimples in the overall population is 26%, and two out of three families studied had more family members with dimples than without, even though dimples are a recessive trait. The percentage of people who can roll their tongue in the overall population is 65-81%, and all of the families studied had more family members that could roll their tongue than couldn’t. If we based our answer on the families we studied, we would find that only one out of the three families had the dominant genes show up more. Our thought is that this answer depends on what family is being studied because genes are inherited. If a family’s ancestors all had the recessive form of a trait, the descendants would most likely have the recessive form as well. The more families studied, the more accurate our answer would be.
