4. Analyze the significance of Magellan's voyages.
Magellan started the reconnaissance of the Pacific Ocean. He traveled through the Indian Ocean up until Maluku. He thought that the spice islands were near the Americas, and wanted to carry through Columbus' plan of making a western route to Asia. However, there was little interest in this idea, but Magellan still sailed under Spain. On a long and treacherous journey through the unpredictable waters Pacific Ocean, Magellan and his crew completed the world's 1st circumnavigation in 3 years. The knowledge gained from this journey helped establish trading posts and routes.
