Vasco de Gama (pictured below along with his route) was the first European to reach India by the sea, and was a reputable sailor. Portugese mariners sought our fresh resources and land suitable for cultivating. They were influential in wheat ans sugar production and discovered new islands like the Azores and the Madeiras.
