Red Cloud resisted government efforts to move him and his people from their lands. He organized resistance to white expansion into his people's territory. Fort Laramine was on the Bozeman Trail as a short cut to the Oregon Trail and the gold-rich lands. When the government built forts along the trail north of Fort Laramine, Red Cloud United several different Native American troops to drive them away. This battle was known as Red Cloud's War in which he won.
