Ch. 38: Contemporary World- Africa and Latin America
Africa
A. The Organization of African Unity was created to try and address problems of foreign interference and internal struggles within Africa, trying to encourage independence by redefining borders and increase unity. The Kwame Nkrumah took unity to the extreme as they encouraged resistance and defiance to foreign power by the entire African continent as one contingent.
B. The "apartheid" system instituted white supremacy in South Africa and encouraged racism that had been a part of the nation for a long time. About 87 percent of the land was reserved for white people.
C. Nelson Mandela encouraged resistance to "apartheid" by becoming a figurehead of resistance, spending 27 years in prison. Being mixed, he could easily empathize with the people. He was also a peaceful and inspiring individual, easily rallying the people under the cause.
