Fredrick Douglass was born as a slave in February of 1818 in Maryland. He was a slave for about 8 years and escaped when he was 20. During his time as a slave his mistress tried to teach him to read but his master turned her against him. But, by that time he already had the want to learn. The white kids in the area taught him. He wanted freedom and equality for all. He wrote nine books. He married twice. He lost his first wife Anna Murray-Douglass to a stroke and then remarried two years later. He had five children. He also supported women's rights as well as his own. Fredrick Douglass died in February of 1895 of a heart attack.
